Quiet Truth: You Choose Your Thoughts, You Choose Your Emotions

Do you ever feel like you are completely at the mercy of your emotions? One moment you are going about your day with a sense of calm, and the next, a sudden wave of anxiety, self-doubt, or frustration washes over you, leaving you feeling entirely swept away. It is an exhausting way to live, feeling as though your inner world is constantly dictated by external circumstances, sudden triggers, or the unpredictable weather of your mind.
In my fifteen years of working in mental health, both in hospitals and out in the community, I have sat with many people who feel exactly this way. They feel trapped in their own heads, caught in unrelenting thought loops that they simply cannot seem to escape. For a long time, I experienced this too, believing that my feelings were just an automatic reaction to whatever was happening around me. But through my own journey of personal awakening, my intuitive path, and my professional background, I discovered a profound, life-altering perspective that bridges evidence-based therapy and intuitive transformation.
Today, I want to share a foundational concept that we explore deeply within The Little Powerful Company. It is what I call a Quiet Truth, a gentle yet revolutionary realisation that can help you step out of anxiety and back into your own power.
The Hidden Link Between Mind and Feeling
To understand how we can reclaim our emotional landscape, it helps to look at how our minds are wired. In traditional therapy, there is a concept known as cognitive restructuring. While that sounds highly clinical and complex, the core idea is actually beautiful and deeply intuitive. It simply means that our emotions do not come directly from the situations we find ourselves in. Instead, our emotions are created by what we think about those situations.
When something happens, our mind instantly tells a story about it. If you do not receive a reply to an email or message, your mind might tell the story that you are being ignored, or that you have done something wrong. That story immediately triggers feelings of anxiety, rejection, or sadness. But if your mind tells the story that the other person is simply busy, has stepped away, or is focused elsewhere, your emotional state remains perfectly calm.
The event is exactly the same, but the emotional outcome is completely different because of the thought you believed. This is the essence of cognitive restructuring. It is the understanding that our thoughts act as the lens through which we view our entire lives. If the lens is smudged with old beliefs, anxiety, or self-doubt, our emotional experience will reflect that. By gently polishing the lens, we can begin to see, and feel, our lives in a completely new light.
The Quiet Truth of Inner Choice
This brings us to a beautiful, grounding reality that can completely transform how you navigate your daily life. It is a simple statement, yet when you truly let it sink into your heart, it changes everything:
"When you choose your thoughts, you get to choose your emotions also."
This is not about pretending that everything is perfect, nor is it about forcing a layer of toxic positivity over genuine pain. It is about recognising that you are the author of your own inner narrative. You do not have to be a passive observer of the thoughts that drift through your mind. Just because a thought pops into your head does not mean you have to believe it, feed it, or allow it to dictate how your day unfolds.
When we are caught in anxiety loops, we often feel completely powerless. It feels as though the worry is happening to us. But when we pause and connect with this Quiet Truth, we realise we have a choice. We can notice the anxious thought, acknowledge it with compassion, and then make a conscious decision to choose a softer, kinder, or more grounding thought instead. In doing so, we are choosing our emotions. We are deciding that we want to feel peace rather than panic, and trust rather than terror.
Bridging Science and Soul
While cognitive behavioural therapy gives us the practical tools to map out these thoughts, I have always felt that true, lasting transformation needs something more. It requires us to bring in an openness to spiritual and intuitive practice. When we look at thought selection from a soul perspective, we realise that our thoughts are also a form of energy.
When we constantly feed anxious, self-critical thoughts, we are keeping our entire system in a state of high vibration and stress. We are telling our bodies that we are unsafe. But when we practise choosing thoughts that are aligned with our deep self-worth and inner calm, we invite our physical and energetic bodies to settle. This is where evidence-based science meets the quiet power of intuition. We are not just changing our minds, we are shifting our entire state of being.
This practice is a core part of my mission at The Little Powerful Company. I want to help you see that you are not your thoughts. You are the quiet, steady awareness behind them. Once you find that space of awareness, you can begin to actively direct your mind, stepping powerfully into intentional living.
How to Practise This Today
If you want to start practising this Quiet Truth in your own life, here is a simple, three-step guide to help you begin:
Notice the Physical Shift: Anxiety almost always starts in the body. When you feel a sudden wave of tension, a tightness in your chest, or a fluttering in your stomach, treat it as a gentle alarm clock. It is your body telling you that your mind is spinning a story.
Catch the Story: Ask yourself, "What thought am I believing right now?" Try to write it down or say it out loud. Getting it out of your head instantly takes away some of its power.
Offer an Alternative: Gently ask yourself, "Is there another way to look at this? What is a softer, truer thought I can choose right now?"
By repeating this simple practice, you will slowly begin to break the automatic loops that keep you feeling stuck.
Finding Strength in Community
Unlearning years of automatic thinking is not something you have to do all by yourself. In fact, trying to break these deep-seated mental habits in isolation can often feel overwhelming. That is why I am so passionate about bringing people together in my group coaching sessions and through The Little Powerful Course.
When we gather in a shared, supportive space specifically focused on anxiety relief, we quickly realise we are not alone in our struggles. The collective energy of a group allows us to witness others reclaiming their minds, which in turn inspires us to do the same. It creates beautiful, healing ripples of change that help us all step out of our individual thought loops and into a collective sense of peace and clarity.
In the coming months, I will also be sharing more of these grounding insights in my upcoming pocket-sized book, A Year of Quiet Truths, designed to be a daily companion on your journey to inner peace. But for today, as you go about your life, I invite you to carry this one truth close to your heart:
"When you choose your thoughts, you get to choose your emotions also."
Take a deep breath, trust your inner guidance, and remember that you have the power to shape your own emotional landscape, one intentional thought at a time.
